Why Write?

This blog is sort of my baby.  It’s been around, in one form or another, since September of 2007.  So that’s three years.  That might not seem so long to you, but when I think about the things I’ve started and never finished, it seems like a really long time to me.

I have a one-third finished manuscript about war, the military, and my Dad that I’ll probably never finish.  Well, maybe I will.  I have this website – and the posts are seldom.  The more I learn about the internet, the more I learn that a “me” blog like this is pretty much never going to be picked up by anybody, never going to have a lot of traffic, and never going to make me any money.  So why keep at it?

Mainly, I didn’t start it to make money.  I started it because I had a corporate job that allowed very little creativity, I had nearly gotten fired for blogging on my MySpace blog, and I wanted a little corner of the Internet all to myself where I could work on my chosen craft and vent my frustrations, fears, mania, and other overly dramatic emotions.

So, mission accomplished, right?  I mean sure, I’m paying to host this site, so it would be nice if it made enough in ads or something to pay for that, but it doesn’t, and that is OK.  Ive got other things in the works that might take care of that for me.  And, they might not.  But at least, every day, I’m learning something.

And, at least, I have a place where I can say whatever I want and post ridiculous, poorly-drawn depictions of the AlligatorFishPig..

alligator fish pig rough draftIf you are one of the two people who reads this blog on a regular basis, and you totally miss my acerbic wit that is mixed ever so gently with my raw, emotional sensitivity (ha ha haaaaaaaaaaaaa!) you can read stuff I write other places:

Weird Diseases
Strange Houses
Stupid Laws
Bizarre Bytes
Wedding Stuff
Marketing
Best Websites
How to Videos
Richmond Virginia
Books

And two dear, awesome friends of mine and me are working hard on The Cool Consumer, a product and services review site.

I’m also working on a thesis, a volume of short stories, and a huge independent website project on J.D. Salinger.  But I’m still going to take time to post stuff here, because this is MY place.  And I can talk about AlligatorFishPig all I want to.

And nobody else will let me talk about Shatner…

So, in answer to the question, “why write?”  Because I can.

Miscellaneous Ain’t No River In Egypt

A few things.  One, I know you’ve been totally dying to hear about my YouTube progress, mentioned in that blog I did about dogs back in May.  I’m happy to report that because of my diligent tagging and keyword use, my views have gone from a measly 6 views to a whopping 17 views!  Good job, everybody!

Sarcasm.  It’s what’s for breakfast.

In other news, I recently went to the beach.  That is usually good news, but for somebody with psoriasis, it’s great news.  The sun and the sand, combined with the salt water act as some amazing healing thing that makes me much better.  I want to live there.  I realize that in the grand scheme of beaches that Virginia Beach is, like, pretty lame, but it’s close by to friends and family and blah blah blah don’t judge me.

That’s all for now.  Meh.

Sometimes About Dogs – Everybody Loves Dogs, Except People Who Don’t Like Dogs

So, the internet is all crazy about dogs, right?  I mean, post a video of a dog and you’re, like, getting eight thousand YouTube comments a day.  Or so I hear.  Some of the YouTube videos I’ve posted are one of a contractor drilling in my front yard, a crappily-taken video of Lily Scott’s version of “Fixing A Hole,” and the Ukrop family announcing the sale of Ukrops to Ahold Company.

I’ve learned a lot about things called “keywords” lately.  I posted these two videos of my dogs, but I named them “Jake and Bailey Playing,” and “Jake and Bailey Playing With The Circle Toy.”  The deal with these “keywords” is that they are the words people use to search for stuff.  So, if someone was looking for a dog playing with a toy, they wouldn’t know to type “Jake” or “Bailey” or “Circle Toy” into YouTube’s search field.  That is why the videos have only been viewed 9 times, and that has all been by me.

I’m trying an experiment, and you can totally go down this road with me!  Aren’t you so glad and excited that I’m willing to share my internet experiences with you guys?  Aren’t you also so glad that I wait seven or eight years to jump on any new internet trend?  OK, maybe not that long, but I am kind of a late bloomer.  Or lazy.  Maybe I’m just lazy.

I’ve “beefed up” the YouTube post.  I changed the title to “Dogs Playing” and I put in a description.  Granted, in the description I ramble on a bit about the fact that the dogs keep murdering squirrels, but I guess some description is better than no description, you know what I mean?  I also added something called “Tags.”  Tags are like keywords in that they make your post show up because it has those words associated with it.

**You do realize that I’m over-simplifying keywords and tags and stuff because you guys already know this and so do I because I work with an SEO Company, right?  OK.  Glad we got that cleared up.

I’ll keep you posted as to the progress.  I’m assuming the amount of viewings my video receives from this site won’t skew the results so much, because traffic here is small, yet greatly appreciated.  I know you can’t wait to see what happens!

So that you don’t feel totally cheated, here are some pictures of my dogs.  My cute dogs.  My funny dogs.  My cute, funny dogs.
